BEFORE YOU VOTE: |
|
| The Texas Music Awards
are modeled after a hybrid of the The Recording AcademyŽ (Grammys) and the "People's Choice
Awards." While the awards are not decided in the exact manner as
either of these, the criteria are similar and the processes also have
similarities. To maintain the integrity of the awards and the voting process, it is important for you to know the details of the process. Your vote is an integral part of that process. Who is eligible? Only performers who are members of the Academy of Texas Music are eligible for the Texas Music Awards. Each Member of the MyTexasMusic.com website is also a member of the academy. Membership must be obtained prior to December 1, 2006. Members who are eligible for awards which require a qualifying album must have said album for sale on the MyTexasMusic.com online retail website prior to December 31, 2006, and said album must have been released no earlier than December 1, 2005. This requirement is waived for paid members of the Academy. Not every award requires a qualifying album. Who votes? The Academy Voting Board consists of past winners of the Texas Music Awards, the two co-founders of the MyTexasMusic.com website, and the general public. Each individual member of the Academy Board gets one vote. The voting is styled after the AP Writer's Poll with each nominee being ranked 1 through 5. The public's vote is a single count 'pick one' style of voting and counts as 7 votes in the 2007 process. Each year, the public vote accounts for a number of votes that represents a figure nearest 10% of the total vote. Members of the Academy of Texas Music also vote and their vote counts 20% toward the total. You can join the Academy here. Why should I vote? While it is true that 70% of the votes come from the peers of the nominees, it is important to remember that pleasing the fans is still a big part of this business. Performers must maintain a high level of quality in their music but must also garner support from their fans on a continual basis. The public vote, therefore, plays a major part in the outcome of the voting process. Where are Pat Green and Willie Nelson? Many very famous performers are not eligible for these awards. Although all qualifying Texas performers are invited to join MyTexasMusic.com and/or The Academy of Texas Music, not all have done so at this time. You are involved in the fifth year of this voting process, and only the fourth year of public involvement. You are a part of history in the making. Each year, more Texas performers come to understand the importance of the Academy of Texas Music. Next year, who knows! How accurate and secure is the voting? Your vote is collected by automated event handling software. The results are made available only to the administrators of the event. Each vote is collected and printed for safekeeping. At the end of the process, an independent accounting firm may be given the ballots for verification. The results are kept secret until the day of the awards show. |
