As a drummer, percussionist and pianist, Billy Bucher has performed in a wide variety of music from jazz to rock and blues bands. After moving to Austin, he branched into progressive country with Ewing Street Times, which featured the late John Vandiver, Shake Russell and Michael Mashkes. They traveled around Colorado, the Midwest and East Coast and performed on everything from the annual Willie Nelson Picnic to several Kerrville Folk Festivals. As a classical and experimental player, Bucher performed on mallet instruments and more recently on a wide variety of Latin instruments. (He once played a John Cage composition with the only instruments given him: a broken cymbal, a glass jar of nuts and bolts and an electric sensor which diluted the sound of every object it touched!) Recently, Billy worked on two separate yet interrelated CD projects. The first was for multi-instrumentalist Cornell Kinderknecht, and the second was for delightful singer/songwriter Shelly Niebuhr (both projects available here on MTM!). Aside from his musical accomplishments, Billy was also a regular contributor of music articles to "Dallas Jazz Magazine" and "The Dallas Observer". He was the first person ever to have a short story published in the "Dallas Morning News' Guide" section of the paper, and has recently begun work on a second novel. As if all this weren't enough, professionally, Bucher teaches private drums, percussion, and piano in East Dallas and surrounding towns in conjunction with his wife Betty, who teaches private piano lessons. Billy also currently performs with Texas songstress Ann Armstrong and partner Steve Hughes as well as an exceptional bassist named Hugh Vestal. Ann's group of desperados can be found entertaining from Gruene Hall in South Texas to MacHenry's in Ft. Worth. Billy has also begun studying the Native American Flute.
