Driftwood
Driftwood "SWEET CORN" ©2003 (Liquid Daddy) "SNAKE FARM" ©2005 (Liquid Daddy) by Lucky Boyd When I coach songwriters, I continually ask them to find new ways to say common phrases. As the primary songwriter for Driftwood, Craig Higgins has mastered that trick. So much so, that I spent a great deal of time trying to decipher the opening track "Waiting on the 7/09" from their 2003 release " SWEET CORN" (Liquid Daddy). Only after consulting the composer did I learn that the numbers had no real significance, which added to the allure of the song and made it even more interesting. [I did learn through my research that the corncob pipe was patented by Henry Tibbe on July 9th, 1878 - pure coincidence.] Higgins co-writes a few tunes on the album with Gary Hoover and one with Jimmy Jowell. Jowell's "Mama's Song" also appears on the disc. Driftwood is [L-R in photo] Gary Hoover, Paula Higgins, Jimmy Jowell, Gary Springs, Mike Bounds, and Craig Higgins. Jimmy and Paula platoon the lead vocal duties on this thirteen-cut homegrown release. The sound is songwriter based with a focus on originality. While the disc is devoid of flashy production, the message is clear that this music is filled with Texas attitude. With a folk-country-rock blend of deliveries, Driftood brings a new dimension of songwriting to the party. Innovation and insightfulness are the trademark of this release. The 2005 release is "SNAKE FARM" which, coupled with the band's excellent interactive website and the album's well-placed sound effects, makes for one of the year's most interesting projects. The folk-rock offerings are a continuation of the band's tried and true methods of loose-feel rhythms that make for a nice Texas listen. This band has a unique energy that ebbs and flows seamlessly throughout the entire dynamic of the album. Dedicated performers, Driftwood continues to turn out innovative sounds and showcase tunes. The latest release is another thirteen-cutter that flows from influences of folk, rock, and alternative sounds. More great tunes from a great Texas band. Become a fan, get your discs today!
