Many a burnt finger has come immediately following the words, “Don’t touch that, it’s hot.” Point being, we don’t always do what we’re told, often opting for see-for-ourselves act of defiance which can have a range of consequences. Where would we be, however, if the Wright Brothers had heeded the “don’t try to fly” warnings? Greg Ashley has put a sign on the front of his CD that effectively says “Please don’t play my songs on the radio.” The message further implies, “Parents, don’t buy my music for your kids.” All of this wrapped in a seemingly unnecessary title “MEDICINE FUCK DREAM.” (Birdman Records) Free speech being what it is, one has to let the music stand on it’s own merit, and if you ignore the warnings and buy the disc, you’re going to get an education. Greg Ashley’s music is lyrically dark at times, but timeless in its meaning, and lively in its delivery, blurring genre lines with a lean toward folk and rock. Nevermind that Hank Williams song in there. The album lyrically doesn’t require a parental warning for individual words, but the message is unmistakably adult as Ashley talks of heartache, pain, war, and the ills of society in general. While the CD’s title never even appears in the lyric sheets, it’s less than hapless meaning is felt throughout the disc. Ashley is a master of emotion, bringing the listener to any place he wants them to be. A perfectly orchestrated and masterfully produced project, Ashley’s MFD will garner a cult following with more fans than you can imagine. So while the motive might have been to see just who was willing to ignore the obvious, the resulting answer will be many, many, many. Get the disc today for only $12.99!
