Humanimal
As you might have suspected by the name, this band of radical Texans are definitely cross-bred. Rap and Rock, Jazz and Funk, Humor and More Humor. Catchy lyrics and upbeat grooves make this one of the more enjoyable albums we've heard in a long time! Along with Skunkweed and The Dog Men Poets, the sometimes Devo-esque Humanimal join what appears to be an emerging genre all their own in Texas music. They're fun, sarcastic, honest, shocking, nasty, twisted, and talented. "Ohmigosh, did they just say THAT?" Yes, my dears, they did - deal with it! Dave Jimenez on vocals, Paul Langlais on Lead, Dan Aranda on drums, J.J. Weiss on Bass and Jason Hernandez on Sax are simply combustible together. Poking fun at everything from the Hamburglar to Hollywood Hogan, every song is a roller-coaster trip all its own. The new worker anthem "Switchin' My Shifts" is sure to be a cult classic…if you've ever hated your boss, this one's for you. Another favorite is "A Movie Called Tron", a speedy walk down memory lane - hugely entertaining - you'll have to listen to it a few times to catch all the clever phrases, but it's worth the effort. A few songs are listed differently than when they appear, but I'd say it adds to the album's charm. The intermittent use of Hernandez's sax is perfectly placed - not overdone, and the drums are as tight as the blue jeans on your Junior High sweetie were. Jimenez has the ultimate vocal capability to carry off this walk on the wild side, and possesses the required talent to rattle off the fast-paced lyrics in the allotted time frame. But even if the lyrics were non-existent, the music itself is awesome - which makes it perfect for the real word-heads AND the casual listeners. One piece of advice for this group - next time, include a print-out of the lyrics to your songs - hell, you could probably publish them as a short book and have another avenue for income! Good job. One thing is for certain - you absolutely must have a great sense of humor and not be offended easily. Get out of the rut you're in and listen to music with a personality for a change - let Humanimal slap you around the room a bit…you deserve it. - J. Boyd
