This sought-after Houston area entertainer is a walking-talking party of her own. Jen Rathbun plays the piano as comfortably as any musician I’ve seen, using it to accompany, rather than to take away from her angelic voice. Rathbun’s voice is true and strong, capable of multiple octaves, and is the main instrument in this ensemble. You’ll hear a three-pronged attack in her music; the orchestration, the vocal work, and the insightful lyrics. Each song is an island, containing a completeness that leaves you satisfied like the last page of a good book, yet the emotion in each tune leaves you pining for the sequel. Rathbun’s writing is sometimes jingle-like, or similar to the theme song of a television sitcom, in that it’s easily absorbed and often hummed repeatedly long after the initial infusion. Her concepts are memorable, too, as in “Zoosong,” a whimsical folly with an age-old message.
