Jiggernaut
As a young aspiring chemist, I once mixed milk and phosphorescent paint together to see if I could get the neighbor's cat to glow in the dark. The results were disastrous. Some things just shouldn't be mixed together and swallowed. Until now, I would have said the same of Celtic music and Rock 'n' Roll. Jiggernaut has attempted the alchemy of mixing traditional Celtic music and blazing rock, and the results are pure gold. The debut offering, "IN SEARCH OF MORE," is a well-thought collection of wonderful Celtic Rock tunes. The music works on many levels. In each cut, you'll hear what you know to be Celtic, but it's wrapped in groove that introduces you to new instruments, new rhythms, new musical ideas. Every performer on this disc is an absolute virtuoso at their instrument. Perfectly arranged, expertly produced, and masterfully performed, this is an exciting project. Deanna Smith Scotland's vocals are a highlight of this collection, as are the clever arrangements of traditional songs, and the brilliant original material. The first time through, this is a listening disc, as you don't want to miss a single beat. About the third time through, it becomes one of those favorites that you never let sit too far from the player. Those of you who know this reviewer will remember that I own a mere five-disc changer, and I'm never ashamed to tell you who's discs are in it. I think I'm going to go out and buy a bigger changer. I need room for the Au of Jiggernaut. (for you non-chemists, Au = gold). If you're a Celtic fan, you're going to be amazed. If you're not a Celtic fan, you soon will be. Celtic Rock is the phrase coined for Jiggernaut. Their 2004 release is "EVOLUTION," and it's truly a testament to the fact that bands can evolve and still make great music. A few of the players may have matured, become parents, settled down a bit, but the sound continues to seriously rock. The band tries some new directions on this disc, but every thing they try works beautifully. The album is perfectly produced, and stands poised to be nominated for something this winter. No doubt. As little as $12.49 stands between you and your new favorite disc. Get it now!
