Joanna Gipson has been performing in singing/songwriting competitions since 1964. She played at the original Old Quarter in 1975 and opened for Townes Van Zandt at that time. In 1986 she began performing with the Minarets of the West in Kansas City, MO. Joanna was the songwriter for the band, played guitar and sang. They released a CD in 1992, titled “CITY OF LOVE” which was carried by the Baha'i Distribution Service catalog and quickly became a top seller (#1 in the folk category). The currently available CD “IN YOU,” also features the Minarets and was released in 1999. Joanna is an award-winning artist with wins at the Arts Afire Annual Song Contest, and as a regional winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival. As an opening act, you might have seen Joanna warming up for the Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys, Shake Russell and Dana Cooper, and Lucky Boyd. Folk music, at its best, is soothing and meaningful. Joanna combines the two in a refreshing manner that leaves the listener satisfied. Catch this performer live when you can. Her stories of how the songs came about are as interesting as the songs themselves.
