Joel Hofmann Band “ONE MORE DAY” ©2008 Genuine Cowhide Records Review by Lucky Boyd The Joel Hofmann Band has no trouble being the ‘fun’ band. This Texas foursome winds its way through some old favorites while bringing you their own brand of country. Hofmann is the chief writer on this eleven-cut release which features the entire band with a few special guests. The guest performances of Earl Poole Ball, James Shelton, and Redd Volkaert are stellar. Ball and Volkaert turn in award-worthy performances. Hofmann carries the vocal duties with his own country style that is as much retro as anything else, balancing traditional sounds with a few modern rhythms. It’s my guess that the disc can’t come close to seeing these guys at a live show, but it does serve to help you get your JHB fix from one gig to another. The highlights are the guitar work on track one and Hofmann’s treatment of a Hank Williams classic on track eleven. There’s also the gratuitous drinking song in which Hofmann confesses, “If I’m Not Drunk, I’m not drinkin’ today.” Look for good things from this San Marcos band.
