Born in Orange, Texas in the early part of 1952 – East Texas on Interstate 10 at the border with Louisiana. Kevin is the fifth of seven brothers. His family moved to Houston, Texas in 1955 where he spent the next 37 years of his life. His early music influences include Roy Rogers, Utah Carl (a local Houston TV legend), Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Merle Haggard, The Kingston Trio, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, George Jones, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Buck Owens, Marty Robbins, and of course Willie Nelson. Started learning the guitar in 1965 and was playing rhythm guitar in The Mustangs and singing lead vocals by 1966. Went on to co-found The VW's in 1967, and Duffy's Bar & Grill by 1968 till 1970 when Kevin put a stop to playing in public. Began writing songs in 1968 and continued playing guitar and writing songs until the present day. Notable recordings were made between 1977 and 1980 with two friends who had their degrees in music. As of 2010 Kevin does not read music notation or the Nashville method, but those are on the list of things to learn. Continued from 1980 until present day to make informal home recordings of song ideas, and have applied for SR 1-314801271 for 11 songs entitled “KEVIN MATTINGLY – BROKEN EAGLES”. Kevin began the process of recording “WALK IN MY DREAMS” in May of 1998 with old friend Bill Browder and working with Layton DePenning in Buda Texas along with the other members of www.DENIMband.com the process took about one and a half years to complete the Master CD. The first batch of CD's were received by January 2000 and a promotional marketing program for “Americana” radio launched. Kevin has been a member of The Fort Bend Songwriters Association in the early 1990's where he performed at many open mics, and served a short while as Editor of the monthly newsletter. He is currently a member of The Houston Songwriters Association. He spent four years as a member of NSAI – Nashville Songwriters Association International and attended the Songwriter 101 Seminar in 2000. Currently Kevin is attending, and a member of the www.AustinSongwritersGroup.com in Austin, Texas. Kevin's current Singer/Songwriter buddies are Bill Browder, Layton DePenning, Mike Cross, Vince Bell, John Arthur Martinez, Sugar Bayou, Freddie Steady Krc, and Bruce Newman, all of then were either born in, or currently live in Texas. Kevin and his lovely wife Betsy along with Chewy the 19 lb. Peek-A-Poo male dog, and Yankee Belle the 20 lb. Poodle female dog live somewhere between Dripping Springs and Austin Texas.
