Texas just keeps churning out potential superstars. The Great State offers up one of its own, Kyle Hutton, who is turning heads in a big way. Hutton’s debut offering “SMALL PRICE TO PAY” (River Bend) is a ten-cut dazzler of Top 30 Country radio-ready tunes. Released in 1999, Kyle’s youth is evident but it doesn’t hold him back. His writing far exceeds the level of his contemporaries as he keeps the college-aged drink-it-up mentality at bay. Good for you, Kyle! Not only is this disc a good listener, it makes a good dancer, too. Two years can mean a lot in this business, and in Kyle Hutton’s case, it has meant the difference between a very good album and an outstanding one. Kyle’s 2001 release is “COMING HOME” (River Bend), produced by Lloyd Maines, and visited by half of Texas, including Terri Hendrix, Roger Creager, an award-worthy performance by Ken Reynolds, and my favorite bottom-guy, Glen Fukunaga. The album showcases a mature Hutton, poised and ready for the big time. This eleven-plus-one collection finds Hutton penning songs again, with a little help from Ken Reynolds on a couple of tunes, and every track is a treasure. The subject matter is fabulous, the performances are first rate, and the production is flawless. Another two years has passed, but it will be hard to improve upon this disc.
