The road from Rugby, England to Spring, Texas is not as long as you might think. Laura Jane Kauffman made the trip and set up shop in Texas making music that quickly developed a Texan attitude. Strength and independence are the trademarks of good Texas music and Kauffman is in no short supply of either. Her lyrics are down-to-earth with subtle entendres that please any level of listener. This acoustic album features Kauffman on guitar and vocals with Matt Cleghorn and Alex Szrok performing on most of the cuts. There’s a jazzy feel to about half the tunes including the favorite “Ain’t Nothing But” on which Kauffman delivers her most commercial sound. Having seen her perform live, I can tell you she’s an adept accompanying guitarist and can hold her own on stage. Coming from a musical family has given Kauffman an elevated level of comfort with the music, allowing her to embrace her listening public with insightful and innovative delivery. Kauffman’s debut “LATE NIGHT CONVERSATION” is quickly followed by “LATE NIGHT CONVERSATION – PART II” which is an extension of her original photo shoot, a continuation of her sessions, and an expansion of her talent. While each cut is a melodic gem, “Love Gives You Wings” is the most beautiful cut, showcasing Kauffman’s songwriting and her confident voice. Laura Jane Kauffman is comfortable writing about life and living, and her albums are full of artistic delivery. Her talent is commercially viable as well, and if she decides to make the turn from artistic to commercial, I believe I know a host of producers who would stand in line for the chance to take this transplanted Texan to the top.
