Lynn Pettijohn’s “RIDING THE WIND” (Ridge Records) gets right to it with the opening cut “Riverboat Wine” which laments the love lost in the bottle. Pettijohn wastes no time in giving you a serious dose of country music. The title cut is a good crossover tune with definite buckle polishing possibilities. Lynn’s voice is warm and friendly much like the early T.G. Shepard tunes. The project was recorded at the famed RT Studio in New Caney with a cast of regulars which includes two of my favorite guitar players of all time, Randy Cornor and Kenny Jackson. Jackson produces with Joe Kuciemba, whose classic cars appear on the album cover. (Love that blue BelAir on the inner jacket!) This disc is a good listener with great country tracks and the occasional gospel laden cut, such as the Mother’s Day anthem, “I’m A Lucky Man.” If you’re looking for something swampy, Pettijohn sings about “Alligator Sam” and my personal favorite is “Fooling Around” as Allen Huff’s piano work sets the tone for this great country ballad. Lynn Pettijohn’s live shows are worth the drive to Hempstead, but you can get your fix between shows for only $13.99!
