Review by Lucky Boyd:
Houston's Melinda Mones exploded on the Texas country music scene with her self-titled debut offering. Energetic and brisk tunes are a Melinda Mones trademark, as she excels on razor-sharp cuts like "Good Life" and "Order of Love." Mones caresses a good ballad, too, as she winds skillfully through "Maggie." Well-produced by Marius-Antonin Fleck, this disc is studded with Mones' rustic Texas voice, aptly suited for her talented songwriting. If only Shelley West were here, she'd be proud to cover some of these great songs. A real treat is the appearance of Hamilton Loomis on this disc. He adds a strong roots-based feel to the project without overshadowing Mones. Loomis lends a hand on guitar, harmonica, and keys, rounding out a squad of talented musicians. Having seen Melinda Mones perform live, I can tell you that this is a great take-home disc, but you don't want to miss her show when it comes around. Become the newest Melinda Mones fan.
