The blending of the two has been done many times, but most fall short lyrically. Darnell adds clever lyrics and all of a sudden you have an excellent project. Sparsely orchestrated, Darnell uses this simplicity to focus on what’s important at the moment. What instruments are present are perfectly accented and compliment the song in every case. Mike Darnell’s sixteen cut “LAST MANGO IN HARRIS” is a great playbill for his live performances, which no doubt will keep you in stitches and thoroughly entertained. “Jesus Is Coming And He’s Driving A SUV” is a favorite on the cute side, but “The Last Hand” shows Darnell’s serious story telling abilities. Darnell’s 2005 release “IT TAKES 2 TO MANGO” is a continuation of his clever and instinctive talent. Galvestonians will appreciate “Elissa” as it tells the story of the great ship which makes Galveston its home port.
