The presence of Tommy Alverson is evident as a few of the songs snub traditional instrumentation for a more artistic and roots feel. Throughout, Brown is true to his form, splendid vocals, stunning harmonies, and outstanding arrangements. You’ll hear Brown’s voice change just a little from song to song as he gets into character for each performance. His voice is truly an instrument as he can deliver sadness and lament when needed and can motivate with gleeful and rowdy when appropriate. Brown immerses himself in each cut, owning it, making you believe he’s lived it. You can sing country music for a lifetime and never learn to do that. Brown is a pro at it. Randy Brown “NEVER HEARD OF HIM” ©2005 (Independently Released) Review by Lucky Boyd Randy Brown has released a twelve-cut gem of classic country sounds. From the opening cover of “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!” to the Brown original “The Johnny Bush School of Country Music” you’re in for a treat of traditional country sounds performed in modern style. Brown’s collection includes a half-dozen well-written originals and some lesser known covers. A personal highlight of the album is Brown’s perfect Texas delivery of “Little Ole Wine Drinker Me,” a song I grew up listening to on Dean Martin records. Every song is masterfully performed with a host of flawless pickers under the expert production of Ronny Dale Shultz. Brown’s voice is one of the best around as he adds warmth and comfort to each cut. Look for big things from this Cowtown resident. He’s surrounded himself with great friends in the business and he certainly has the talent required to be a major player in Texas music. “NEVER HEARD OF HIM” might have been the perfect title for this disc, but it won’t hold up for the next one.
