Saylor White
His songs have been covered by Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Eric Taylor, Calvin Russell, and Keith Asbury, to name a few. He's appeared on compilation CDs with the likes of REM and Steve Earle. He is Saylor White and his brand new offering is "GRAVEN IMAGE"(Last Call Records) and the disc is an absolute treasure of tunes. The wonderful lyrics, Saylor’s sultry delivery, the Ken Gaines cover, and the appearance of Kenyon White, Jack Saunders, Rick Richards, Wayne Wilkerson, and Steven Puntenney make this a must-buy for Texas folk and folk-blues fans. The album also includes a solo version of “For All We Know” delivered as only Saylor White can. While the entire disc is fabulous, I’d say this cut is my favorite because of the true passion which exudes from Saylor White as he cries out to God in frustration at the ills of today’s world. It is, however, a song of hope and faith that things can be better. It is one of the most powerful songs ever written, in my opinion. The song, along with the title cut, set the theme for the entire release, but White’s underlying tones of hope and justice are well-veiled in his occasional glimpses of despair and hopelessness. He’s found a way to say poetically all the things we secretly feel in our own hearts. For those who love soul searching, personal spirituality and a private walk with our universe, this disc is an awakening and is full of anthems to our cause. This is an award-worthy disc. Saylor’s earlier release, "JUST THE WAY IT GOES," is also available. This disc includes the highly acclaimed "Crossroads" as well as excellent new reaches for White such as the thickly blues-stricken "Demon In This House" and "Prop Me Up," both featuring Jellyroll Johnson on harmonica. Woven into the remarkable production of the music you will hear Saylor White's true talent as a storyteller. White spins a funk-laden lament of oilfield roughnecks on "Hard Men," sends a message of impending regret to a forlorn lover in "Love Song," and tells what is perhaps his most poignant story of the album, one of coping with broken homes, in the title inspiring, "That's Just The Way It Goes." Texas music fans will find this a must-buy. Saylor White's live performances are a treasure. Catch one when you can, but be ready to sing along. Get either CD- $13.99 each!
