Steelbeam
Right On Records offers up their second artist, Steelbeam. Their first was Eric and Shelly, which included singer/songwriter Eric Leikam. Steelbeam also includes Eric Leikam, but that’s where the similarities taper off. The latest release is a fabulous six-cut EP “FIT THAT STEEL” which is a continuation of Steelbeam’s foray into Texas roots and blues. Excellent harmonies and solid writing are the order of the day on this disc, a re-recording of cuts appearing on their earlier release, with the band settling a little further into their niche, narrowing the spectrum of an already hard-to-define genre. This is a project the band can be particularly proud of as they lean into their artistic wind and create a more commercial sound than in their earlier recordings. Guitarists Kyle Judd and Eric Leikam produce a great capturing of the band’s essence, and Jerry Tubb at Terra Nova turns out yet another flawless mastering. Steelbeam’s earlier project, “GOOD OL’ FASHION BLUE COLLAR SOUND” has a self-descriptive title. Blues, rockabilly, alternative, and even country influences are heard throughout the album. It’s a bit of a ‘man’s’ album, although not sexist, but just a common man’s kind of sounds. Nothing too flashy, nothing sloppy, just good Texas alternative folk and blues sounds. This is sort of ‘Blues Light’ for the not-so-hardcore blues fan, where lyrics don’t get lost in self-indulgent guitar riffs, and bass players don’t demand their own four-minute solos. I was pleased with this twelve-cut slim-cased release, and while I know it was nurtured in Austin, the whole album just reminds me of Lubbock. Go figure. I loved it. Get your copies today.
