Review by Lucky Boyd
Susie Warley reaches a new level with her 2009 release. Penning ten of the fourteen cuts and co-writing a couple more, Warley has come into her own with this expertly produced album. John Inmon, producer, has captured Warley gloriously, and showcases the arrangements as much as the performances themselves. The opening cut sets the tone for the disc, as Warley delivers one of only two covers, both by Buzz Cason. The project is lively and entertaining, as Warley touches all topics of life, mostly feel-good subjects. Her voice is Texas folk and her dynamic delivery keeps the listener involved. The writing is solid and creative throughout, including Warley’s co-write with fellow MTM member Shake Russell, who also appears on the album. Warley’s co-write with Max Milligan is a tribute to times gone by and the family members who made it special. It’s a broad-range project that features outstanding performances by Warren Hood and John Inmon. The album meets expectations from Warley and offers a few tracks that could surely become conversation topics. A contender for best cut is “Hermit On The Hill” which seems to be the most picturesque track. After a second listen to the song, you start to relate to the many levels upon which the song is built. Perhaps Warley’s best work to date, “NAKED DREAMS” peels away the layers of Susie’s inner self and exposes a look at the true creativity residing within.
Originally from New Hampshire, Susie Warley moved to Texas in 1984 and now resides in Horseshoe Bay with her husband and their two sons. Her singing career began at the age of 7 in church and school choirs. When 12, she received a used Yamaha guitar and, after learning the basics from a friend, she accompanied herself in a school talent show. A year later, her father built a Heathkit organ and Susie enrolled in formal keyboard lessons, emulating pop/folk legends Emmylou Harris, Stevie Nicks, and Linda Ronstadt. After moving to Texas, she became enamored with the musical genius of singer-songwriter Shake Russell. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Texas - San Antonio, Susie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the Bread Loaf School of English in Middlebury, Vermont. For this former marathoner, running remains a vital part of her daily routine. Writing is yet another passion that Susie enjoys. In addition to songwriting, she also writes poetry and is working on her first novel. We're proud to have Susie join us as a Platinum member!
