Listening to the Texas Attitude CD reminds me of a story. One of my favorite local acts around Galveston County is a band called 'Blue Attitude' headed by Buddy Manchac. I once told Buddy he couldn't use that name unless he was committed to the blues all the way. So Buddy bought a motorcycle, quit his job, started wearing sunglasses indoors and drank whiskey every day. Now that's commitment. I was ready to offer the same adage to Justin Harper and the guys of 'Texas Attitude' until I heard their 2002 self-titled release. This band has made a musical commitment to Texas all the way, blending cross-genre styles into a true Texas sound that's country inspired, blues flavored, and rock driven. Terry Schambers' performance throughout is stellar. Harper pens and co-writes many of the tunes with a few covers added in, such as "Is That You" by the great Hugh Prestwood (Randy Travis, Trisha Yearwood). While my friend Buddy acquired his two-wheeler as part of his commitment, I would imagine Harper takes a different view. It was a moto-cross accident leaving him wheelchair-bound for months that gave him the drive to press forward with the Texas Attitude project. More than seven years of performing now have vaulted the band into a great regional following with some national recognition. The disc is a home-spun project which showcases the band's endless potential. This is a great get-acquainted disc and a good addition to your Texas music collection. These guys really have 'the attitude!' One of my favorite producers, Clay Ryder, would be in paradise recording this talented band. I think I'll send him a note.
