I love Texas music. I’ve always described it as the result of multiple influences finding new and refreshing heights in music. The Cry does just that. Robert Woodrich, MTM Member Ray Younkin, Anita Kruse, and Robbie Parrish comprise this remarkable group which takes influence from folk, rock, latino, jazz, and more. Stadium rock bands would have loved having this group along as an opening act. Ballads are turned to anthems with excellent vocals and superb instrumentation. The disc is “UNDER THE MOON” (Cloud Nine Records) and is a 14 cut dream. Surprising uses of piano against distorted guitar and contrasted with a lone trumpet make “Without A Prayer” an album favorite. Kruse’s ethereal vocals accent several tunes including the lyrically brilliant “Painting Pictures.” These are not the songs you will hear on pop radio, but you might find yourself leaving this disc in the player for days or even weeks as the comfort and the edge overtake you and hypnotize you into submission. Texas music? Yes. More so, this is an artistic effort, marrying the diversity of talents into a project that is really about the music more than anything else. Fans of Fleetwood Mac, REM, and even Pink Floyd will have a connection with this disc, but that’s just the start. As with most Texas music acts, there is no ‘sound-alike’ for this group. Get the disc, and you’ll agree. It’s yours for only $13.99!
