Big Red and the Soul Benders
©2007 Independently released
Review by Lucky Boyd

With blues singers, I’m often forced into a comparative analysis, telling the reader, “if you like this, then you’ll like that, etc.”  The hunt for a unique voice is often futile.  A different style is almost impossible to find.  Once in a while, I stumble upon something that defies comparison by being just a little different.  This, my dear reader, is that.  Kelley “Big Red” Taylor not only belts out stellar quality blues performances, but writes her own material, which is another elusive attribute in this genre.  Taylor possesses an ‘old soul’ quality to her voice which blends nostalgia with modern groove.  With an outstanding lineup of pickers, this album is a multi-faceted project that not only serves as a brilliant introduction to new blues fans, but a marvelous addition to the collection of any real blues hound.  Classic styling with a unique twist, Big Red and the Soul Benders take you on a sultry and exhilarating journey through the genre.  You’ll want more from this Texas treasure, and you’ll be a solid Big Red fan from the first note.
