Review by Jinelle Boyd
Lovers of the Lord and of the music praising His name have a new reason to rejoice. “THERE’S A TRAIN COMING”, the new release by Elliott Fikes and Soul Serenade, is one of the most exciting, uplifting gospel recordings we’ve heard in a long time! This offering is so refreshingly different from the masses, for many reasons. The first thing that struck this listener was the incredible saxophone playing of leader Fikes…who could easily have a lucrative career as a jazz musician. But we’re thankful he’s chosen to utilize his God-given musical talents to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Elliott surrounds himself with wonderful band mates, including Lori Gray on keyboards and vocals, Becky Goldsmith on percussion, trumpet, and vocals, Shane Gray on bass, lead, and vocals, Greg Pound on lead and rhythm, and Denny Hill on drums and percussion. Heart-warming standards such as “Amazing Grace”, “There Will Be Peace In The Valley For Me”, and “People Get Ready”, are covered (ala Fikes-style), and some awesome, funky original offerings such as “Just Reach For Jesus”, a jazz-infused finger-snapping diddy written by Goldsmith, and “God’s Son”, a song written by Goldsmith and Sherry Fikes, and sung over what sounds an awful lot like the music from “Shotgun” by Jr. Walker & The All-Stars, but with new flair. Regardless, it’s a very clever way of getting a new message across with an old familiar tune that fans are sure to love. It doesn’t matter what your religious affiliation, because after listening to the whole album, you’ll feel musically and spiritually satisfied – this talented group covers all the appropriate bases – gospel, jazz, funk, etc. So if you haven’t guessed already, we’re the newest Elliot Fikes and Soul Serenade fans, and you will be too…get the CD today and see for yourself. Elliott, you’ve got a good thing going – keep up the great work!

His love for the horn and his God-given talent gave him the means to begin a professional career while still in high school. Elliott has shared the stage and recorded with many legendary performers. He relocated to Austin in 1990 and has been playing Texas venues ever since. His current band, Soul Serenade, have released a new Gospel album, “There’s A Train Coming”.
