There's a group. They're musicians. They're mainstays at the Old Quarter Acoustic Café in Galveston, Texas. They are friends of Wrecks Bell. They include Vince Bell, Shake Russell, Dana Cooper, Bert Wills, Myrna Sanders, Bianca, The PC Cowboys, and Diane Craig, to name just a few. They all have something in common. They know how to perfectly work a hallowed room that is most likely haunted by the Ghost of Townes Van Zandt. It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to another in this fine group. Janet Z has been appearing there for some time. Her career radiates to many places, but I assure you, there's no more intimate venue than the OQAC to enjoy Janet's music. Her 2004 release "GRUENE RAIN" is a fabulous collection produced with friends Bert Wills and the inimitable Benny Brasket. Even thought this is a studio album, the very first note takes you right to your seat on the second row at the Old Quarter. Janet Z's writing is stellar and her performances are just laid back enough to keep you coming back for more. "I Can't Sleep" is a well-written lament with a Suzy Boggus delivery. The title cut is arguably the best track on the disc as Janet Z sprouts her blues wings and flies flawlessly through signature guitar licks and a smokin' hot B3. (that's an organ for all you newbies) Top to bottom this is a great disc. There are some softer tunes and some barn burners in this twelve-cut treasure and you'll love each and every one. Get the disc, add a little extra reverb, pour yourself a Star Bock Beer and pretend you're right there. Better yet, see you at the Old Quarter.
