Review by Jinelle Boyd
I chose this particular CD to review for many reasons. Mainly? It’s a breath of fresh air! It’s always a gutsy move to record a CD of cover tunes. Listeners tend to be very critical when someone else is recording a song they’re used to hearing by the original artist – so it’s a tough job to give cover tunes the justice they deserve. Enter Jerry Watkins and The Epics…these seasoned professionals have shattered that standard into a million little vinyl pieces, resulting in a 12-cut treasure that will remain in your CD player for a long, long time. The cover tunes chosen for this album allow anyone, from any age group, to enjoy the music. From Otis Redding’s “Mr. Pitiful” to the Rolling Stone’s “Harlem Shuffle”…from Robert Parker’s “Barefootin’” to the classic “Danny Boy”…the line-up is unique. That’s what makes “MEMORIES” a super listening experience…a lot of thought was put into the song selections to make sure they were anything but ordinary. Willie Nelson would be proud of their version of “Funny How Time Slips Away” and Don Williams would truly dig “Tulsa Time” ala The Epics. But arguably the best cut on the CD is “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” (The Casinos, circa 1967) – one of the best slow dance songs around. (Admittedly, while listening to this song, I coaxed my husband up out of his chair to dance around the office floor with me – and that’s not an easy thing to do!) Kudos to Jerry Watkins & Joe Licatino for stellar vocal and guitar work, James Bourque on the skins, Sammy Clifton on keyboard, and the awesome horn section of Doug Deane, Ramon Ramos, and Gannon Miller! (By the way, the horns on Ace Cannon's instrumental "Tuff" is worth the price of admission!) My only wish is that I lived closer to the Port Arthur area so I could catch their show live. If they’re this good on CD, I can only imagine what a blast they must be in the flesh! Seriously, if you want your next event to be a memorable one, get The Epics to provide the entertainment. But regardless, do yourself a favor, and OWN this CD. Your collection is not complete without it!
